Integrated Solid Waste Management Project
According to the “Complex Action Plan on Improving the Environmental Situation in the Republic of Azerbaijan (2006-2010)”, approved by the decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on September 28, 2006 five year project was planned for improvement of the solid waste management in Baku.
On May, 2009 the loan agreement on “Integrated Solid Waste Management” Project was signed between the Ministry of Economic Development on behalf of the Government of Azerbaijan and the World Bank in the framework of the Absheron Rehabilitation Program. This project intends to improve and support the modernization of the solid waste management system in Baku.
The overall project objective is to support the reform of the Greater Baku solid waste collection and disposal operations into an effective and sustainable system in the fields of (1) improving environmental conditions at the existing waste disposal sites, (2) building-up operational, management and communication capabilities, (3) rollout of collection services, and (4) data collection and planning.
The project will be realized in 5 components:
Additional financial agreement was signed between the Ministry of Economy and Industry and World Bank on January 10, 2014 within the framework of the “Integrated Solid Waste Management” project as ongoing measures aimed at improving environmental situation in Baku.
The Additional Financing which cover 2014-2016 will finance the full rehabilitation of Balakhani landfill in accordance with international standards in order to extend its life-time for the next 20 years, development of short, medium and long term draft action plans of the national waste management strategy document in Azerbaijan Republic, the adjust legislation with international standards in this field, preparation of feasibility studies for regional landfills and transfer stations.
